Stop Calling Them Security Cameras! (10/04/2025)

The English language is difficult enough as there are words like "live" and "live", "read" and "read", and "tear" and "tear." If you read them as two different words, then I applaud you but if not, then take this as a learning moment for you. Those damn heteronyms.

Here is another learning moment: Cameras do not secure anything.

They survey.

The cameras only monitor, detect or provide alerts while observing via video. The software is getting better with AI and specific detections, but don’t be fooled, there is no security. They only provide evidence of the incident.

Unless these surveillance cameras come with actual means of security like a physical gun where it can pick out the perpetrators then there is no security. The security part of the plan comes when an actual human (or animal) provides the physical activity of securing the area.

Having microphones and built-in sirens helps, but these tools do not provide security.

I, too, have slipped and called my cameras "security" only to correct myself and use surveillance correctly. I am the only person who will provide security when my surveillance equipment provides me with the information on when to act.

Simple as that!

I will call them security cameras when an actual form of physical security (Animal, Human, AI Robots, or Terminators) is deployed automatically by means of the software. If your system is from Costco or Sam’s club, then you have a surveillance system, not security.

Where is the security?

Where you put your system is important as what good is it when the intruder takes the equipment with them? Do you have proper security of your surveillance system?

All this surveillance, where is the security?
