I Never Fit In (08/28/2025)

Square peg in a round hole?

If miscellaneous was my category, this would be the closest one where I almost fit in.

Today, I announce that I am officially retiring from trying to fit in with people.

I played sports growing up and I didn't fit in with the Jocks. I was their "friend" during the season but once it was over, I was out of the click. I describe "friend" very loosely as they still said shit to and about me during the season. All was cool when I scored the game winning goal in soccer. Posers.

I love metal music, but I never fit in with the metalheads. I didn't wear the metalhead type of clothes or smoke weed. I called them the "Tree People" as they hung out by a tree by the high school smoking and listening to tunes. I did wear metal band shirts like Metallica but that was it. The jocks would make fun of me for listening to them, but my HS football team adopted "Seek and Destroy" as their anthem. Go figure. Posers.

I love to program and use computers, but I never fit in with the nerds. Now the nerds are called Unicorn's, Ninja's or Rockstar's which is something a nerd would do. I was kicked out of my college computer users group for some unknown reason. My forever home is with Adobe ColdFusion, Microsoft SQL and PowerShell but I don't fit in with any other CF, SQL or PS developers. God forbid I name my PS cmdlets in a non-traditional way or use "classic" CF. No wonder I don't have any friends.

The Adobe ColdFusion summit is coming up next month (Sept 22nd 2025) and I would like to go but I'll most likely won't talk with anyone. I attended in 2017 and that was the case. Lunch alone, seminars alone, drinks after alone. It was an amazing experience.

This isn't a sad story about gaining empathy but a realization of who I am. I am someone who walks alone on my own path by myself. I'm going to keep on keeping on.

And here I go again on my own. Going down the only road I've even known or whatever that Whitesnake song is about.

I ain't wasting no more time trying to fit in.
